Is it possible to install a cork floor over a radiant heating system?
1. Is it necessary to apply a coat of polyurethane over the pre-finished floor?
No additional polyurethane coating is required. The flooring is pre-sealed and requires no additional finishing.
2. How do I install Cork floating floor?
Our "click" system flooring is a floating floor. Once the floor is clicked together, the weight of the planks will hold the floor in place. See our installation guide for more information.
3. Can the cork be installed at any grade in the house?
Yes, for an installation in a basement, we recommend the use of a 6 mil polyethylene film to be used as a moisture barrier. A floating floor is not attached to the sub-floor and rests on top of the moisture barrier.
4. How durable is Cork Flooring?
Cork material used for flooring is very dense and is designed to withstand even commercial traffic. Cork floors are coated with a polyurethane finish that can withstand heavy objects, however, cork does "give under
pressure." Cork has a memory and recovers well after being compressed. Like any other flooring material, cork flooring can be damaged by the legs of furniture. For this reason, dragging heavy objects with sharp edges over the floor is not advised. We also recommend that furniture with sharp or damaged legs have protective load spreading pads underneath.
5. Is it possible to install a cork floor over a radiant heating system?
Cork, being a natural insulator, can slightly interfere with the transmission of heat. Your floor may take longer to warm up but the heat will be retained in the floor for a longer period of time. Prior to installation, the slab needs to be heated and the temperature has to b e maintained at 75 degrees during installation. As with any cork or hardwood floor installation, material has to be acclimated in the room for 48 hours prior to installation.
